What Are You Listening to?

Postby Rayven » Tue Jan 05, 2016 4:07 pm

Been rotating between

Paper Kites two EPs (Woodland, Young North)
Odesza's album In Return
Monsters Calling Home EP, and their new album from their new name Run River North
Margot and the Nuclear So and So's

Would say Paper Kites are pretty enjoyable for a background experience. Very soft and passive, but I didn't really see a single that held out as something I would put on a playlist.

https://youtu.be/uzlqJ_3kI9M -- Halcyon

Odesza presents a really solid an fluid album that is immersive and the songs blend together to an experience. Though, one might use the word repetitive if they were so inclined. The overhyped second song lives up to its fame in the way that Language by Porter Robinson seems to keep making new rotations because of its worth. Memories that You Call is more on the instrumental experience that is provided by the album. It's altogether an enjoyable experience and I'd suggest it.

Haven't gotten too far into Run River North's new album, their old EP under Monsters Calling Home includes a solid cover of Mr. Brightside with two stand out hits which each seem to speak for themselves. Though, the song list for their new album and band may just speak to previous success. Their lack of publication follow-up may leave these as only memories.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Margot & The Nuclear So and So's. Their latest album is an experience down the nostalgia of being a fan and having been disappointed by the last two releases because they don't live up to the expectations of a band that was once really, really good. Without daydreaming too much or forcing songs from the new release onto you. I'd suggest instead revisiting their discography if you find yourself interested in their sound.

The album The Dust of Retreat is phenomenal. Below is the first song of it. If you have the inclination, follow that trail. The second song, is a beautiful love song that may be muted and changed due to the content of the video. But, still showcases a good moment out of their follow up albums, Animal and Not Animal. Each were imagined setlists, and when no decision could be made, they became companion B side sort of albums.

Too busy trying to turn these (and other) demos into real songs to listen to much else. Gojira this week so far.

Told Rayven I'd reply to this, here ya go! Now to listen to all the stuff you posted finally..

Maybeshewill
A great melodic post rock band. The title track from Not for Want of Trying is a standout. I kind of love it because it shares a soundbyte from the movie The Network the with another amazing song by Mouth of the Architect, Hate and Heartache (https://youtu.be/3IsYUaKqDVc).
Not for Want of Trying - https://youtu.be/a1nrtRLhvuQ
He Films the Clouds Pt. 2 - https://youtu.be/T2Tg0t_2e2E

The Pirate Ship Quintet
Probably the artist I've been listening to the most lately, great for long walks or chill times. The tracks kind of fluctuate between a somber and aggressive mood. Another post rock band, a few standout tracks are:
You're Next - https://youtu.be/_ppbiI9igag
I Kina Spiser De Hund - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjBYGWdEt7g

Agalloch
Favorite album of theirs is The Mantle, this is one I'll frequently play when I've got time to listen to it all.
The Mantle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHJjSSrR6x4

Melissa Auf der Maur
She puts out some fantastic music.
Out of Our Minds - https://youtu.be/oRI5PP0xcpI
Lightning is my Girl - https://youtu.be/ySUXy5BBqRs

Been on a little bit of a hip hop kick, have been enjoying most anything by El P, like his newer project with Killer Mike called Run the Jewels:
Run the Jewels (explicit) - https://youtu.be/AfuCLp8VEng

Hail Mary Mallon is quite a good album with a funny theme, here's a track:
Dollywood (explicit) - https://youtu.be/IrhV73XuHM0

Grieves (based in Seattle woo woo) is a pretty chill hip hop artist too, and a lot cleaner than the previous:
Lightspeed - https://youtu.be/5So-_z-jkHE

Dark Time Sunshine (also Seattle), been enjoying quite a bit:
Murder Scene (explicit) - https://youtu.be/Wn-LdXI0Q3I
Return of the Agenda (explicit) - https://youtu.be/U41KDRh8iBQ

Bonus singles, stuff I don't listen to frequently, etc.:

John Butler - Ocean
Probably my favorite acoustic finger-style guitar songs. I wish he would put out more stuff like this instead of some of his more poppy work with the John Butler Trio which, while still good, lacks what you hear here.
https://youtu.be/6VAkOhXIsI0

J Dilla - So Far to Go
A groovy hip hop instrumental.
https://youtu.be/AdZK0HeYkwM

A Tribe Called Red - Electric Powwow Drum
Quite a different style of music.. don't remember how I started listening to them haha.

My mate dragged me to a gig back in December at one of our local University bars.

Some yank band called Halestorm. No idea what I was getting into but suffice to say, it was one of the best live gigs I have seen in ages.

Bowie :(

Just to the old tunes, but I'll have to pick up the new album soon.
