It's highly impractical to discuss this as a hypothetical. Context is everything. If you were harassed by another player, by all means report him/her. I don't agree that this game has become worse. I can recall some pretty toxic players who've come and gone. I can also recall some that grew up and got invited back even though they really shouldn't have been. Cheaters and creeps. Either way, there are proper channels for verbal abuse.

One thing that could help is to have more than a qp/quest requirement in order to achieve and retain the rank of master. Douchebags need not apply. If someone is caught harassing another player to the level implied in this thread, remove their master/remort status since it's unbecoming of a character of that stature. Dock clanned characters SEVERLY. It's not that difficult and the cases will be few and very, very discouraging.

Heavy handed? I guess, but well deserved.

However, if this is another case of people not appreciating banter and being told what to do by ranking characters, we have a bit of a problem. Especially on DS where characters have been slaughtered for insubordination in the past. That was pretty harsh too but perfect rp. Accept the pecking order, but don't accept abuse. Report it.

Well said and with a level headed attitude. Of course accept nothing less than that from you. :)
The encouraging posts I've witnessed are a great example of what we can be. Thank you.

Some of the implications and accusations on this thread will be addressed at a later time by Vampa. However, the idea that moderation is the solution to solving the intrinsic issues that the player base has with regard to how you choose to treat each other and how you feel victimized is not a long-term solution and further entrenches the idea that some are treated differently than others.

Calling someone by toxic names because, for example, they set up a block for a flee-choke for a linkdead person is why this game is toxic. But, the blaming of the toxicity on the language in this example, and not the person who has made the choice to play this game in a toxic way ignores the reality that there are consequences to what you choose to do. Name calling generally comes from choices you make with regard to how you want to play this game and how you want this game to be played.

It is not realistic to say, "I want to play this game however I want, but I don't want to hear if anyone doesn't like the way that I play it."

The environment of toxicity is a trickle down perhaps, and reflects how the immortals treat players. We have stepped out of a historic lull and things are fundamentally changing: this requires a change from the player base as well. If the people feel that there are players who have created a hierarchy by virtue of a hierarchy existing for a long time in an unfair way, then rise up. No one is above accountability and nothing will keep you safe from persecution if you are deemed wrong.

That being said, we are not looking to create a safe space for players who feel persecuted because of the choices they have made, nor are we looking for a flood of indictments presented in a he said, she said form that begs for validation through a hand-slap. Any reaction is that--a result of something that happened previous--no action, tirade, or response exists in a vacuum without context.

If the player base does not make a conscious choice to engage with challenging the status quo that assumes there are people who are in power and protected by their position, and persists to believe that nothing can be done to change this hierarchy, then we will never have a fundamental shift in the attitude, play style, and endgame results of actions. Rather, we will create a game that fundamentally believes you keep your head down until you are in a position with the right friends, labels, or flags that will protect you when you commit the same abuses you have held grudges against others for.

Too often people claim they are victim to the circumstances that they created and this removes their ability to take personal responsibility and account for the choices they made that led to the situation they experienced. Self-awareness, on the technical side of playing the game, and on the conceptual side of corresponding about the game, must be a priority. We must take ownership of the choices we make with regard to action, communication, and circumstances. The game will die from a lack of accountability and ownership; retaining and acquiring new players will come from an environment that is enjoyable and people that are enjoyable. The immortal Staff will not engage in moderating he said, she said that come from the assumption that all responses exist in a void.

I really disliked the post by Feneon. Anyone else agree that wants to rise up? Or is nothing going to keep me safe from persecution?

Name calling generally comes from choices you make with regard to how you want to play this game and how you want this game to be played.

A really unhelpful basis for approaching the problem. All this does is tell players who lack self-awareness, empathy, and self-control that spewing garbage is a legitimate response to an in-game disagreement. It's not. Calling someone a retard is not a legitimate response to differences or disagreements about game play.

I disagree. You are identifying one statement and interpreting it out of context. Feneon was just identifying reason people get thrown bad vibes, not condoning or approving it.

You've got to walk in another man's shoes to truly appreciate where they are coming from and while the delivery might be totally bad, you can like appreciate the content sometimes.
