Guarded by an etched brass-colored door, the defender's office looks
well-adorned and comfortable, but with an obvious purpose, judging by the
thick metal chains. They are set into the far wall and seem tailor-made
for holding prisoners. A table, desk and chair, all solid oak and finely
carved, complete the picture. Several unlit torches line the walls. One
small, solitary candle on the desk struggles to fight back the darkness.

hits them. The natural beauty of these small items shows that the
Creator has an attention for detail in all things. An ocean of rippling
sand stretches to the northwest, while a more fertile green slope climbs
upwards. A large dark-colored boulder stands at the base of the rise,
blocking passage to the south.

Sand Before a Smooth Hillside
Silver and golden crystals of quartz sparkle when the light
hits them. The natural beauty of these small items shows that the
Creator has an attention for detail in all things. An ocean of rippling
sand stretches to the northwest, while a more fertile green slope climbs
upwards. A large dark-colored boulder stands at the base of the rise,
blocking passage to the south.

Burning Plains
The hill which lies to the south is in stark contrast to the dry sandy
plains. The dew on the grass glistens in the morning, again in contrast to
the heat from the sand and the rays of the sun which beat down on top of

Two Large Spiny Cactii
Only the hard animals and plants can survive the harsh conditions in the
desert. In the sand stands two columnar cactii. One is just less than
twenty feet tall and the other a little more than eighteen feet tall.
Instead of having a central stem, however, a cluster of five to twenty
slender branches grow from a point at ground level and curve gracefully
upward. These water-storing trunks are about six inches in diameter and
have twelve or more deep-green, rounded ribs.

Somehow a lone tree has struggled to survive in this harsh climate, its
roots tapping down far below the earth to provide its stability and
substance. Its limbs look scoured to a satin finish by sand and heat,
though its leaves look healthy to an almost oiled shine. A small pool of
water trickles up from the earth, evaporating almost as quickly as it
surfaces. To the east the desert begins in earnest, with waves of sand
stretching onward past a ridge. More hospitable terrain lies to the south
and west, where there is less sand and more greenery.

the east begins waves of unrelenting sand, heat shimmering off its surface
both night and day.

The Dry Plains

The quartz and silica deposits which make up the plains was caused from
natural erosion of the nearby mountains and swept along then left when the
waters dried up many ages ago. The grains of sand are like drops of water
and the edges of the dunes like waves in the ocean of sand which stretches
to the east, west and south.

Sand Dunes
Ridges in the sand of various shapes and sizes can be seen all around. The
parabolic U-shaped mounds with convex noses trailed by elongated arms are
often referred to as blowout, or hairpin dunes. The long arms of the dunes
are caused by the wind bending round some form of vegetation and later
allowing the sand to be deposited.

Underneath a Huge Cliff
A small spit of land to the east offers a much more welcome respite than
the towering cliffs above. Battered by waves and soaked by the spray, it
would take a very desperate person to try and tackle them. The ocean swells
and writhes, threatening to drag you further away from shore.

Climbing the White Cliffs
The limestone cliffs offer little in the way of handholds or stability, the
soft rock crumbling in your hands. Huge waves crash into the base, slowly
eating away at the edge of the Termool. With rocks crashing down from above
it feels as though the entire cliff face could collapse at any moment.

A Sudden Dropoff
The limestone floor continues south but immediately plunges into the surf
below. Pieces of rock crumble over the ledge into the breaking surf.
Foaming seawater pounds into the cliff and recedes in the never ending
pulse of the sea. A misshapen chunk of stone seems grossly out of place in
the timeless dance of this place.

casually by the edge, as if not realizing that at any time fate could send
it, too, plummeting into the abyss below.

The End of the Road
The sea stretches off into the horizon and and hides whatever mysteries the
great ocean keeps. Water smashes ferociously off the rocks below. Waves
hiss as they find holes in the rock formations and send blasts of spray
jetting spans into the sky. The restless sanctuary of this place is marred
by a single statue gazing out to sea.
